• "When the truck (a Freightliner with a Caterpillar engine) turned about 5,000 miles, I replaced the motor oil with AMSOIL 15W-40, the gear lube in the rear end with AMSOIL Gear Lube, and put AMSOIL Racing Oil in the transmission.

"The truck now has about 400,000 miles on it but when it had about 250,000 miles, AMSOIL was really put to the test. I was driving through New Mexico when the water hoses gave up and I lost every drop of water in the cooling system. It got so hot that by the time I got to a Caterpillar Dealership, the head had turned the same color as the red-hot manifold.

"The mechanics said that because the engine had taken so much heat, major repairs would probably be necessary. It turned out that they did have to replace 5 injector nozzles, but they were amazed to find that the head wasn't cracked as was suspected at first. The AMSOIL Engine Oil, which had been in use in this truck for 36,000 miles already, had taken the heat and saved the head. The mechanics were going to throw the oil out, but I told them to save it, have it analyzed and they would find they could put it back in. In fact, I told them that if the sample proved the oil was not suitable for continued use, I would pay for the analysis. Needless to say, I didn't have to pay the cost on an oil analysis and the oil was put back in the truck. I drove it another 34,000 miles before draining it.

"During these repairs the engine was torn down and again the Caterpillar mechanics couldn't believe what they saw. The cylinder walls still had the cross-hatch markings that made it look like an engine with 5,000 miles on it, not 250,000. Wear measurements showed to be within specifications of a brand new Caterpillar engine.

AMSOIL pays off from the time you start using it. Initially the extended drain saves downtime and maintenance costs, but more important is the long-term savings because of wear reduction. If you normally go four years before rebuilding an engine, you can probably go 6 years or even more before rebuilding if you use AMSOIL. And that's a big savings!"
